Faneuil Hall Marketplace, one of Boston’s most recognized historic landmarks, attracts more than 18 million visitors annually and needed a better way to handle winter weather maintenance activities like snow removal, ice management and weather monitoring to ensure the safety of their tenants and visitors. Compass Facility Services was engaged to develop and implemented a successful snow and ice management program to proactively address Faneuil Hall’s winter weather maintenance needs

Challenges

Faneuil Hall Marketplace (FHM), sprawling over 6.5 acres, with thousands of pedestrians, visitors and tenants traveling it’s cobblestone walkways, was in need of dependable snow and ice management services. In prior seasons, this historic landmark had experienced multiple situations where contracted service providers had failed to perform work as scheduled, resulting in dangerous walking conditions, lost sales for their retail tenants and numerous complaints.

FHM, who was already contracted with Compass Facility Services for janitorial, maintenance and porter programs, turned to Compass to develop and implement a reliable and effective snow and ice management program.

Solutions

Compass began by putting together a plan for snow and ice events. Working with the client, a customized site service plan was developed. Compass then engaged the various outside vendors required to ensure the right equipment, personnel and supplies were available to immediately execute the site service plan during and after an inclement weather event. Compass utilized advanced meteorological technology to provide the intelligence required to plan for an upcoming event, providing the ability to put teams on alert so they could be quickly mobilized when significant snowfall or ice events took place.

Compass’s management were in direct contact with the account manager to ensure all required equipment, personnel and supplies were being utilized to ensure prompt removal of snow and ice, allowing all pedestrians, visitors and tenants safe passage through their many walkways. Management was also in contact with FHM’s site managers ensure they were completely satisfied with the work performed.
